On Tuesday, February 20, the Minnesota State Legislature reconvened in Saint Paul to begin the 2018 legislative session. By law, the legislature must adjourn by May 21, meaning legislators and the governor have a short timeframe to complete their business.

Each legislative session is unique. This year, the legislature does not have to pass a budget bill (since the state is already operating under a two-year budget), meaning they are not required to correct any major budget issues. However, if the state projects a surplus in the upcoming budget forecast, many programs will compete for funding. Issues likely to arise include fixing the state's infrastructure and conforming the state's tax code to the new federal tax law changes. We also expect a robust discussion by lawmakers about opioids, elder care, and public safety.

For the University of Minnesota, the Board of Regents has submitted a $238.5 million capital infrastructure proposal to the State for consideration. On Wednesday, February 21, President Kaler held a press conference at the State Capitol outlining the University's priorities and laying the groundwork for the University's request. Learn more about the University's 2018 Capital Request.

The key to the success of the University at the legislature is your involvement and advocacy. We encourage you to engage with your elected officials, neighbors, family members, and friends about why the University is important to you. Advocacy resources are available on our UMN Advocates website.
