Government and Community Relations Update - January 29, 2021

On Tuesday, January 26, Governor Tim Walz announced Minnesota’s COVID-19 Recovery Budget—his budget proposal for the FY22-23 biennium. Read the press release.

In his $52.4 billion proposal, Governor Walz included $46.5 million in new funding for the University of Minnesota in FY22-23, which fully funds our request. In her statement, President Gabel thanked the governor and responded, “An investment in the University is an investment in the future of our state. It’s an investment in accessibility and affordability for Minnesota’s tens of thousands of students who become the skilled, workforce-ready graduates our state, corporate partners, and society need and deserve. These needs are especially important as we address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and work to power Minnesota’s economic recovery.”

The governor’s proposal is the first step in the budget process and sets a positive tone for the rest of budget discussions this session.
