State election update

As we wait for certified election results and recounts in a number of races, it appears that Minnesota will continue to have the only divided state legislature in the country.

As we wait for certified election results and recounts in a number of races, it appears that Minnesota will continue to have the only divided state legislature in the country.

The Republicans are expected to maintain the majority in the Minnesota Senate by one vote for a 34-33 majority. Republicans lost races in St. Cloud, Burnsville, and Plymouth while picking up seats in Lakeville and Austin. In the Minnesota House, the DFL will maintain control but their margin has narrowed with the Republicans picking up 5 seats for a 70-64 majority. This election once again demonstrated that Minnesotans split their ticket among parties when it comes to state races. We anticipate decisions on committee chairs and membership to be announced over the next month.

Per the information currently available, it is likely that the following candidates will be new members of the legislature when the session convenes on January 5, 2021.
