Governor announces supplemental budget recommendations

On Friday, March 16, Governor Dayton announced his supplemental budget recommendations for the FY18-19 biennium. Although not required by law, governors typically submit supplemental budget recommendations midway through the biennium to adjust state budgets depending on changes to economic forecasts. As a reminder, the February forecast projected a $329 million surplus for the remainder of the biennium.

The governor singled out the University of Minnesota during his State of the State speech on Wednesday night, stressing the importance of supporting higher education and urging the legislature to invest in public colleges and universities. 

The legislature soon will release its own budget "targets," outlining its priorities for spending and tax decisions this session and setting the stage for final negotiations with the governor.
